Let's face it - adult learners are not the easiest to motivate! Accountability produces the motivation to learn and retain information.
At the beginning of the program, all participants are asked to complete a 40-question pre-assessment. The average score of the pre-assessment is 22%. After each monthly session, participants are asked to answer the same questions (roughly 4 each month) which were on the pre-assessment and discussed during the specific monthly session. Comparing the same questions but at different stages allows for us to see an increase in overall retention of safety information. Usually we see participants score 72% following the monthly session but expect participants to achieve an 85% or better on the final assessment to receive a certificate of completion at the end of the year.
To achieve success, laboratory staff begin working together - holding each other accountable for knowing each of the questions. The bond that is formed with the knowledge that is gained during this program produces consistencies in safety attitudes and behaviors. This consistency produces a culture of safety within organizations.
